Teak cut from older natural forests is durable and harder; teak from plantation trees, typically young trees are more prone to water damage and splitting, but the kiln drying process allows for plantation grown teak to perform much like the the old-growth teak.
Because of the popularity of the Danish modern style in the 1950s and 60s, teak is experiencing a boom in antiques. Vintage teak is a sought after item.
Teak's popularity has led to sustainable production throughout the seasonally dry tropics in forestry plantations. Propogation experiments from one year old stem cuttings are now being conducted. The concerns for the disappearance of old growth teak forest has led the Forestry Stewardship Council to offer certification of sustainable grown and harvested teak products.
Teak, because of its oil content, is naturally weather resistant, which is the reason it is used in outdoor locations and is durable and looks great, even without a varnish. The age of teak is measured from the annular rings in crosscut sections of the trunk. It is very resistant to the attack of termites.
In the older houses in India teak is used throughout the construction to make doors, window frames, furniture, columns and beams. The largest golden teak building in the world is Vimanmek Mansion in Bangkok, Thailand. Indonesia and Myanmar export teak. The forest departments of the different states are responsible for the care and cultivation of teak.
