All about Teak
Teak (Tectona), in the family Verbenaceae, is a genus of tropical hardwood trees native to the south and southeast of Asia and the word teak originates from the Malayalam word "thekku". Growing to 30-40 m tall, they are large trees, deciduous in the dry season. Teak is commonly found as a component of monsoon forest vegetation.
There are three species:
Philippine Teak, (Tectona philippinensis) is endemic to the Philippines, and is endangered.
Dahat Teak (Tectona hamiltoniana)is a local endemic species confined to Myanmar, where it is also endangered.
Common Teak (Tectona grandis) has a wide distribution in India and Indo-China
Teak: Use and Cultivation
Teak is used for the creation of indoor and outdoor furniture, boat decks, gazebos and other items where its natural weather resistance is great for. It is also used for indoor flooring and furniture veneers.
